By Heléne Geyser, 28 October 2026, 9 minute read
If you’re skimming
- The main things to do are fossil and cave visits (Sterkfontein, Maropeng, WonderCave), wildlife drives, NIROX Sculpture Park, hot air ballooning and quad biking.
- Sterkfontein Caves is closed every Monday, and Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve is closed on most Mondays (it opens on listed school holiday Mondays). Maropeng is open every day. NIROX opens on weekends and public holidays.
- Guided tours on offer include hourly Sterkfontein cave tours, WonderCave tours and game drives at Rhino & Lion.
- Restaurants include The Cradle Restaurant, And then there was Fire at NIROX, the Curious Café at Sterkfontein and three spots at Rhino & Lion.
There’s far more here than one cave tour. Walk through the caves where famous fossils were found, drive past lions and rhino, wander a sculpture park, or float over it all at sunrise.
This page sorts it all into groups, says who each thing suits, and links to our detailed page for each attraction. For the basics (getting there, where to stay), start with our Cradle of Humankind guide.
Opening details below come from each venue’s own website, checked 7 November 2026. Please confirm before you go.

Fossils and Caves: What Can You See?
| Attraction | What you do | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Wits Sterkfontein Caves | A guided cave tour of about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes, plus an exhibition and fossil preparation labs. Tours leave every hour from 09:00 to 15:00, with up to 30 people per tour (Wits Sterkfontein Caves) | Anyone happy on uneven ground. Wits says the tour “may not be suitable for individuals with claustrophobia, acute asthma, or mobility issues” (Wits Sterkfontein Caves) |
| Maropeng Visitor Centre | A self-guided, interactive tour with fossils and stone tools up to a million years old (Maropeng). Each tour takes about 45 minutes to an hour (Maropeng) | People who like to go at their own pace, and Monday visitors, since it’s open every day |
| Bothongo WonderCave, inside Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve | A 45 minute guided visit to what the reserve calls South Africa’s third-largest cave chamber. You go down 87 stairs and then take a lift (Rhino & Lion; Rhino & Lion tickets) | Cave fans who’d rather not crawl. Tours are weather-dependent, so phone first |
Sterkfontein is where the “Mrs Ples” skull was found in 1947, and since reopening under Wits University in April 2025 it offers behind-the-scenes access to its fossil preparation labs (Wits University, 2025). Not keen on going underground? The caves aren’t wheelchair accessible, but the museum, fossil preparation labs and Timeline Walk are, and there’s a separate Exhibition and Prep Lab ticket (Wits Sterkfontein Caves).
Before WonderCave, read the health notice on the reserve’s cave page. It warns about histoplasmosis, a lung infection that can come from fungal spores where bat or bird droppings are present (Rhino & Lion).
Where Can You See Wildlife in the Cradle?
- Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve: home to more than 600 animals and over 30 species of game, including lion, white rhino and buffalo. Beyond the self-drive, it offers a 1 hour predator tour, 2 and 3 hour game drives, a 2 hour sunset drive on weekends from 16:00 to 18:00, and 2 hour guided savannah trails on foot (minimum four people). Wild dogs, lions and cheetahs are fed on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays at 13:00 (Rhino & Lion tickets). Suits: families, first-time safari goers and anyone short on time.
- The Cradle Boutique Hotel: sits on what it describes as a privately owned 9,000 hectare property, with game drives, fossil tours and guided walks (The Cradle). Ask whether non-residents can book them. Suits: overnight guests.
- Lion & Safari Park: on the R512 near Broederstroom (Why Joburg), which Maropeng and the park describe as within the Cradle of Humankind (Maropeng; Lion & Safari Park), though it’s in North West province, outside the West Rand (Wikipedia: Broederstroom). Its own site lists self-drives through a 1,200 hectare reserve, guided drives, night drives and a kids’ play area, and says it’s open every day of the year (Lion & Safari Park). Suits: Monday visitors, when Rhino & Lion is usually shut.
Where Can You See Art?
NIROX Sculpture Park, on the R540, is a weekend and public holiday outing, 10:00 to 16:00 on days without a special event (NIROX). It’s an outdoor wander among sculptures, so it suits couples, art lovers and anyone after a slower afternoon. Two rules to know: no food, drinks, cooler boxes, pets or sporting equipment, and children must be supervised at all times (NIROX).
What Adventure Activities Are There?
- Hot air ballooning: AirVentures says it’s the only operator to launch centrally within the Cradle (AirVentures), and Bill Harrop’s flies from the Magalies River Valley nearby (Bill Harrop’s). Both say a flight is about an hour, with a total morning of three to four hours (AirVentures FAQ; Bill Harrop’s FAQ). Our ballooning guide compares them. Suits: couples and celebrations; children only from about age 7.
- Quad biking: Sun Eagle Adventures runs quad bike rides at Maropeng. Suits: teens and adults. Ask the operator about age limits, as we couldn’t find them published.
What Are the Cradle of Humankind Tours?
Most tours here are run by the attractions themselves:
- Sterkfontein: every cave visit is a guided tour. Wits takes private tour requests by email at [email protected] (Wits Sterkfontein Caves).
- Rhino & Lion: guided game drives, the WonderCave tour and private tours for groups of up to 9 or up to 22 people (Rhino & Lion tickets). The reserve says its guided drives are “led by SATOUR-registered experts” (Rhino & Lion).
- Maropeng: self-guided, so you set the pace.
We haven’t verified any Joburg tour company, so we don’t name one. If you book one, ask which sites and entry fees are included.
Cradle of Humankind Restaurants: Where Can You Eat?
| Restaurant | Where | What the venue says |
|---|---|---|
| Curious Café | Wits Sterkfontein Caves | Quick bites at the caves site (Wits Sterkfontein Caves) |
| And then there was Fire | NIROX, R540 Kromdraai Road | A woodfired grill and tapas café, open Thursday to Sunday. A confirmed booking gets you into NIROX for R80 instead of the usual adult fee (And then there was Fire) |
| Neck & Deck, Thatch and Boma | Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve | The reserve’s three dining spots (Rhino & Lion) |
| The Cradle Restaurant | The Cradle Boutique Hotel, R540 | Describes itself as “famous for its great breakfast fare, long lazy lunches, afternoon nibbles and sumptuous dinners”, with breakfast, lunch and dinner listed every day (The Cradle) |
And then there was Fire’s site gives two different sets of hours, so confirm before you drive out.
For over-18s: gin and beer tastings in and around the Cradle are in our breweries and gin guide. Tastings are 18+ only, so arrange a designated driver first.

What Can You Do in the Cradle With Kids?
- Under-sixes get in free: at Maropeng with a family group and at Sterkfontein, where the limit is two per adult (Wits Sterkfontein Caves).
- Rhino & Lion: play areas and a swimming pool, giraffe feeding at Neck & Deck, and a BMX track where helmets are compulsory (Rhino & Lion tickets).
- Honeydew Mazes, outside our area: it’s in Honeydew, Johannesburg (SA-Venues; Gauteng Tourism). The main draw is a giant hedge maze. It opens to the public on weekends and public holidays from 10:00. Ticket sales stop at 14:30, and casual visitors don’t need to book (Honeydew Mazes).
Sterkfontein says children “should be supervised at all times” (Wits Sterkfontein Caves), so think about whether yours will enjoy a helmet and a dark tunnel. For more family ideas, see things to do in Muldersdrift.
How to Choose What to Do
- Check the day first. Sterkfontein is also closed on 25 and 31 December (Wits Sterkfontein Caves), and NIROX opens only on weekends and public holidays.
- Match it to the group. If someone in your party has asthma, claustrophobia or limited mobility, Maropeng or Sterkfontein’s exhibition may work better than the caves.
- Ask ahead. Sterkfontein suggests phoning on the day to confirm tour availability (Wits Sterkfontein Caves), and Rhino & Lion says to call to confirm WonderCave tours (Rhino & Lion tickets).
Our Cradle day trip guide has sample days.

Things to Do in the Cradle of Humankind: FAQs
What is there to do in the Cradle of Humankind on a Monday?
Your safest bet is Maropeng, which doesn’t close on any day of the week. Sterkfontein shuts every Monday (Wits Sterkfontein Caves), and Rhino & Lion opens on a Monday only when it’s one of its listed school holiday dates (Rhino & Lion hours). Lion & Safari Park, on the R512, says it opens every day of the year.
Do you need a guide to visit the Cradle of Humankind?
No. Maropeng is self-guided, and Rhino & Lion offers a self-drive. Sterkfontein’s cave visits are guided tours run by the site itself, every hour from 09:00 to 15:00 (Wits Sterkfontein Caves).
Which Cradle of Humankind cave is easier to visit?
WonderCave has 87 stairs down, then a lift for the rest of the way (Rhino & Lion). Sterkfontein has uneven surfaces, and Wits says its tour may not suit people with claustrophobia, acute asthma or mobility issues (Wits Sterkfontein Caves). Read both sites’ health and safety notes before you book.
Where can you eat in the Cradle of Humankind?
Options include the Curious Café at Sterkfontein, And then there was Fire at NIROX, The Cradle Restaurant, and Neck & Deck, Thatch and Boma at Rhino & Lion (Wits Sterkfontein Caves). Check opening days before you go.
Is NIROX Sculpture Park open every day?
No. Plan for a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, between 10:00 and 16:00, unless a special event is on (NIROX). The restaurant there lists Thursday to Sunday (And then there was Fire).
