By Remon Geyser, 29 October 2026, 8 minute read
If you’re skimming
- The Cradle of Humankind is about 50 km northwest of Johannesburg. NIROX, on the R540, says it’s about 45 minutes from Johannesburg and Pretoria and 20 minutes from Lanseria Airport.
- Sterkfontein is closed every Monday and Rhino & Lion on most Mondays, so go Tuesday to Sunday for both. Maropeng opens every day.
- Below are timed sample days for families, history buffs and couples, plus a Monday plan.
- Hours come from each venue’s official site, checked 7 November 2026. Confirm before you go.
Looking for a day trip from Johannesburg or Pretoria? The Cradle of Humankind is about 50 km northwest of Johannesburg (Gauteng Tourism), and it’s part of the Fossil Hominid Sites of South Africa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1999 (UNESCO). Maropeng’s tour takes about 45 minutes to an hour (Maropeng) and a Sterkfontein cave tour about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes (Wits Sterkfontein Caves), so the two fill a morning. Add wildlife, art or a long lunch and you’ve got a full day.
This page is for anyone who wants to get out of the city for a day without a long drive, whether you’re dragging the kids, chasing fossils or planning a date. We’ve built the sample days around the venues’ own opening hours, so nobody ends up at a locked gate.
How Do You Get to the Cradle From Joburg, Pretoria or Lanseria?
You’ll want a car, since the sites are spread out. The main routes:
- From Johannesburg: Beyers Naudé Drive (the M5) runs out through Honeydew, crosses the N14 near Muldersdrift and ends at a T-junction with the R540, which is Kromdraai Road (Wikipedia: M5)). NIROX and The Cradle Boutique Hotel are on the R540 (NIROX; The Cradle). In Your Pocket estimates the drive from Sandton to Maropeng at about 30 minutes.
- From Pretoria: the N14 runs from the Centurion side past Lanseria towards Krugersdorp, passing the M5 interchange and intersecting the R540 and the R563 (Wikipedia: N14)). The R563 runs past Sterkfontein Caves towards Hekpoort (Wikipedia: R563)).
- From Lanseria Airport: the Gauteng section of the R540 starts at the R512 just north of the airport, then heads west and south-west to the N14 (Wikipedia: R540)).
Addresses can confuse your GPS. Sterkfontein and Rhino & Lion use Krugersdorp addresses on Kromdraai Road (Wits Sterkfontein Caves; Rhino & Lion), while Maropeng gives Hekpoort Road, Sterkfontein, 1911 Magaliesburg. Pin each stop before you leave home, not at the side of the road.
We haven’t found official drive times between the sites, so check your map app the night before and leave some slack between stops.
Opening Days at a Glance
From each official site, checked 7 November 2026:
| Place | Open | Closed |
|---|---|---|
| Maropeng | Every day, 09:00 to 16:00 (Maropeng) | No closures listed |
| Wits Sterkfontein Caves | Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 16:00, last tour 15:00 (Wits) | Mondays, 25 December, 31 December |

| NIROX Sculpture Park | Weekends and public holidays, 10:00 to 16:00 (NIROX) | Weekdays |
Rhino & Lion’s site gives two different Sunday closing times (17:00 and 18:00), so confirm if you’re planning a late Sunday visit (Rhino & Lion hours).
Sample Day 1: Fossils and Caves for History Buffs (Tuesday to Sunday)
- 09:00, Maropeng. Start with the big picture: a self-guided tour with fossils and stone tools up to a million years old. Allow about 45 minutes to an hour, and be there at least 15 minutes before your booked slot (Maropeng).
- Late morning, Wits Sterkfontein Caves. Then go underground. Guided tours leave on the hour until 15:00 and take about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes (Wits Sterkfontein Caves). This is where “Mrs Ples” was found in 1947, and since reopening in 2025 the site also offers a look inside its fossil preparation labs (Wits University, 2025).
- Lunch, Curious Café. Quick bites at the caves, so no extra driving (Wits Sterkfontein Caves).
- Afternoon, WonderCave. A 45 minute guided cave tour at Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, and the ticket includes the self-drive (Rhino & Lion tickets). Tours go every two hours (Rhino & Lion) and depend on the weather, so phone before you head over.
Two caves in one day means a lot of stairs. Wear the comfy shoes, not the nice ones.
Sample Day 2: Animals and Space to Run for Families (Tuesday to Sunday)
- 08:00, Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve. Gates open at 08:00 (Rhino & Lion hours). Take your own car round, or book a guided game drive for two or more (Rhino & Lion tickets).
- 13:00, predator feeding (Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday). Wild dogs, lions and cheetahs get fed at 13:00 on those days (Rhino & Lion tickets).
- Lunch, at the reserve. Choose from Neck & Deck, Thatch and the Boma (Rhino & Lion). Neck & Deck is also where you buy giraffe feed (Rhino & Lion tickets). With play areas and a swimming pool on site (Rhino & Lion), pack costumes.
- Afternoon, Maropeng. Children under six are free there as part of a family group. Doors close at 16:00, so don’t cut it fine.
Weekend swap: trade Maropeng for Honeydew Mazes, which is outside our area in Honeydew, Johannesburg (SA-Venues). Get there early. It opens at 10:00 on weekends and public holidays, stops selling tickets at 14:30 and suggests allowing at least two hours (Honeydew Mazes).
Sample Day 3: Art, Lunch and Sunset for Couples (Weekends)
- Sunrise (optional), hot air balloon. Both operators describe a flight of about an hour and a morning of three to four hours (AirVentures FAQ; Bill Harrop’s FAQ). Our ballooning guide has the details.
- 10:00, NIROX Sculpture Park. Gates open at 10:00 on weekends and public holidays, unless there’s a special event. Give yourselves the morning to wander.
- 12:00 to about 14:30, lunch at And then there was Fire. The woodfired grill and tapas café at NIROX. It opens from 11:00, Thursday to Sunday, and with a confirmed booking you pay R80 to enter NIROX instead of the usual adult fee (And then there was Fire). Finishing by about 14:30 leaves time to drive on.
- 16:00, sunset drive at Rhino & Lion. A 2 hour guided drive from 16:00 to 18:00, on weekends only, for two or more (Rhino & Lion tickets). The reserve’s site lists Sunday closing as both 17:00 and 18:00 (Rhino & Lion hours), so on a Sunday, confirm the sunset drive is running before you book.
What If You Can Only Go on a Monday?
Sterkfontein is closed every Monday (Wits Sterkfontein Caves). Rhino & Lion opens only on the school holiday Mondays it lists, which include 14, 21 and 28 December 2026 and 4 and 11 January 2027 (Rhino & Lion hours). Otherwise, try:
- 09:00, Maropeng, open every day.
- Lunch, The Cradle Restaurant, which lists lunch every day.
- Afternoon, Lion & Safari Park. It’s on the R512 near Broederstroom (Why Joburg), which Maropeng and the park describe as within the Cradle of Humankind (Maropeng; Lion & Safari Park), though it’s in North West province, outside the West Rand (Wikipedia: Broederstroom). It says it’s open every day of the year from 08:00 to 17:00 (Lion & Safari Park).

Pack and dress right:

- Gauteng Tourism suggests comfortable shoes and water.
- NIROX doesn’t allow your own food, drinks, cooler boxes or pets.
