Muldersdrift and the Cradle of Humankind sit side by side northwest of Johannesburg, and accommodation in Muldersdrift and the Cradle covers country hotels, lodges in private reserves, farm cottages and a handful of places close to Lanseria International Airport. Gauteng Tourism lists “guest houses, boutique hotels, lodges, B&Bs and safari parks” in Muldersdrift alone. Plenty of choice, in other words, and a fair amount of gravel road between them.
This page is for anyone planning a night or two: wedding guests, families doing the caves, couples after a quiet weekend, or travellers with an early flight out of Lanseria. We haven’t stayed at these places. We’ve grouped them by type and told you where each detail comes from. We’ve left prices out because they change; check them with the property.

Smaller, quieter, and often with a nursery or an orchard next door:

Hotels Near Lanseria Airport
Lanseria is a privately owned international airport at the northwestern edge of the City of Johannesburg (Wikipedia). It’s just outside the West Rand, but plenty of people flying in for a Cradle weekend or a Muldersdrift wedding land here. Places close by:
- SleepOver Lanseria: a motel at the edge of the airport with 30 en-suite units. There’s no direct gate from the airport. SA-Venues says it’s about a 10-minute walk from the terminal, or a short cab ride at your own cost.
- Toadbury Hall: about five minutes’ drive from Lanseria, with accommodation and a honeymoon suite (Pink Book). Check it’s taking bookings.
- Valverde: Places.co.za lists it 5.4 km from the airport as a straight-line distance. LekkeSlaap lists a pool, an on-site restaurant and airport transfers by arrangement.
- Cradle Moon and The Moon & Sixpence: Places.co.za lists both about 7 km from the airport, measured in a straight line.
- The Cradle Boutique Hotel: about 9 km from Lanseria, according to SA-Venues.
Straight-line distances aren’t drive times, and the back roads can be slow. Leave a buffer before your flight.
How to Choose: What to Ask Before You Book
- Is it self-catering or meals included? Apricot Hill offers both (Gauteng Tourism), Maropeng’s rate includes breakfast, and Farmhouse58 bills lunch and dinner separately (In Your Pocket). Ask before you pack the cooler box.
- Is there a wedding or conference on while we’re there? Many country hotels here are also event venues. Ask if a function is booked for your dates.
- What’s the policy on kids? Silverstar lists kids under 18 staying free (Tsogo Sun), but policies differ a lot, so ask.
- Do you need an accessible room? Maropeng lists one. Elsewhere, ask about paths, steps and parking.
- How do we get there, and is there an airport transfer? Some listings, like Valverde and Kloofzicht on LekkeSlaap, mention transfers by arrangement. Ask for directions too.
