NIROX Sculpture Park is an outdoor sculpture park on the R540 in the Cradle of Humankind, run by the NIROX Foundation, which started in 2006. It covers 30 hectares of “cultivated lawns, arbors, fields, waterways, and wetlands” on the banks of the Blaauwbankspruit, next to the Kkatlhamphi Private Nature Reserve (NIROX). In short: big art, a lot of grass and a river, about 45 minutes from town.
This page is for anyone planning a weekend visit, a concert day or a Cradle outing with something other than fossils in it. We’re an independent local guide, not NIROX. For tickets, events and the latest rules, go to the official NIROX visit page.
What Is NIROX?
NIROX describes itself as a foundation focused on global contemporary art, with a sculpture park, an artist residency, workshops and outdoor concert venues. The park hosts “more than 60 permanent and long-term installations by artists from across the globe”, plus at least one large curated exhibition of new and temporary work each year (NIROX).
Works on its sculpture park page include Edoardo Villa’s Composition in Red (1975), Moataz Nasr’s Sunboat (2019) and Ebru Kurbak’s The Golden Fog Collector (2025) (NIROX). NIROX says its residency has supported more than 400 artists since it began 20 years ago, and that the central dam was once a commercial trout farm.
The surrounding reserve is described as a 1,000 hectare wilderness of hills, valleys, riverine forests, caves and highveld grassland (NIROX). NIROX also calls it a rehabilitation and rewilding centre for distressed wild animals.

Rules Worth Knowing
The rules on NIROX’s visit page are stricter than many people expect, so read these before you pack the car:
- Not allowed in: food, drinks, cooler boxes, pets, balloons, portable speakers, gazebos or sporting equipment. So no picnic basket and no dog.
- Children must be supervised by an adult at all times.
- Weather: the park is outdoors. In bad weather NIROX decides how to proceed, and there are no refunds.
- Photos: by entering, you agree that you may be photographed and appear on NIROX’s and other visitors’ social media.
- Animals: don’t feed them.
- Entry is at your own risk.
The visit page has no information on accessibility, paths or how long to allow, so if you’re bringing a wheelchair or a pram, email [email protected] or phone +27 60 886 2407 first.
Events and Concerts
NIROX hosts concerts across jazz, blues, folk, classical, opera, new music and performance art, with tickets sold through Howler. Its “What’s On in the Valley” page lists exhibitions, talks, open studios and other events, which NIROX says run throughout the year.
Coming up, as listed on 7 November 2026: Ibiza on the Highveld on 13 and 14 November 2026, with a dinner on both nights and a Spanish market and music in the park on the 14th, and HUGHFEST 2026 on Sunday 29 November (NIROX; Howler). NIROX also lists a solo show by Gordon Froud in its Covered Space in December 2026. These dates will pass; check the NIROX site or Howler for the current programme. Event days can change the normal opening hours, so check before you set off.
Make a Day of It
NIROX opens on weekends and public holidays, so plan the rest of your day around that.
- Fossils and caves: Sterkfontein Caves runs hourly tours from 09:00, Tuesday to Sunday (Wits Sterkfontein Caves), and Maropeng is open every day, 09:00 to 16:00 (Maropeng). Both checked 7 November 2026. Do the caves in the morning and NIROX after lunch.
- Animals: Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve is in the Cradle, and Lion & Safari Park is on the R512 at Broederstroom, over the line in North West province (Why Joburg; Wikipedia).
- A family stop on the way home: Honeydew Mazes is also open on weekends and public holidays, but sells its last tickets at 14:30 (Honeydew Mazes), so go there first.
- Up early? See our hot air ballooning guide, or plan the whole route with our Cradle day trip guide.
Where to eat: you can’t bring your own food in, so this matters. And then there was Fire, the restaurant at NIROX, is open to the public, and booking a seat gets you the R80 park entry. Restaurant bookings are on [email protected] or +27 64 537 4473 (NIROX). Also on the R540, The Cradle Boutique Hotel says its Cradle Restaurant is “famous for its great breakfast fare, long lazy lunches” (The Cradle). Book ahead to be safe.
