Maropeng Visitor Centre: How to Visit, What to Expect and What’s Nearby

By Remon Geyser, 4 November 2026, 6 minute read

If you’re skimming

  • Maropeng is the official visitor centre of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, on Hekpoort Road, Sterkfontein (postal town Magaliesburg).
  • Its self-guided, interactive exhibition covers the formation of the planet and the story of human evolution.
  • It’s open every day, including public holidays. Book online or buy tickets when you arrive.
  • This is an independent guide, not the official site. Hours and prices below were checked in November 2026.

This isn’t the official Maropeng website. For bookings and the latest information, go to maropeng.co.za.

Maropeng calls itself the official visitor centre of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, and its name means “returning to the place of origin” in Setswana. It’s where you go to get the big picture: how the planet formed, how humans came to be, and what all those fossils from the Cradle’s caves actually mean. The caves themselves, like Sterkfontein, are a separate visit.

This page is for families, school holiday planners, out-of-town visitors and anyone who’s been meaning to stop in for years and finally has a free Saturday.

What Is Maropeng and Why Does It Matter?

Maropeng describes its exhibition as “award-winning” and “world-class”, focusing on the development of humans and our ancestors. The visit starts with the formation of the planet, and along the way you see fossils and stone tools up to a million years old (Maropeng). It’s self-guided and interactive, so you can take all the time you need (Maropeng). Handy if one member of the family wants to read every single panel.

The building is hard to miss. In Your Pocket says it’s designed to resemble a burial mound.

Maropeng also has a long link with the caves next door: it ran the tourist operations at Sterkfontein from 2001 until Wits University took over in April 2024 (Wits Sterkfontein Caves: About). Today Wits runs the caves, so you buy a separate ticket for them (Wits Sterkfontein Caves).

Planning Your Visit to Maropeng

Where is it and how do you get there?

Maropeng gives its address as Hekpoort Road, Sterkfontein, 1911 Magaliesburg. In Your Pocket places it on the R400, just off the R563 to Hekpoort, and estimates the drive from Sandton at about 30 minutes. Don’t worry about the Magaliesburg postal address, you haven’t taken a wrong turn. Our Cradle of Humankind guide has the main routes in from Joburg, Pretoria and Lanseria.

The phone number is +27 14 577 9000 (Maropeng).

School groups

School tours are guided and an hour long, at R125 per person, with a maximum of 40 learners per session. One teacher gets in free for every 40 learners, and you can add lunch packs to the booking request (Maropeng). Teachers, you’ve earned that free entry.

The Maropeng Boutique Hotel

Want to stay over? The Maropeng Boutique Hotel has 24 bedrooms sleeping up to 48 people, including 10 king rooms, 13 twin rooms and one fully equipped room for disabled guests. Maropeng says it’s a five-minute walk from the visitor centre and 10 km from the Sterkfontein Caves, with views of the Witwatersberg and Magaliesberg ranges.

The hotel page lists these as included in the room rate: a hot breakfast, access to the pool, restaurant and bar, free internet, air conditioning and free parking. There’s wheelchair access, and an à la carte restaurant (Maropeng). In November 2026 the accommodation page showed rooms from R2,201 a night (Maropeng). Confirm the rate and what it covers when you book. Bookings go through [email protected] or +27 14 577 9000.

Maropeng also lists the Boitumelo Spa, whose name means “happiness” in Setswana and which it describes as “nestled in the heart of Maropeng”.

Make a Day of It

Maropeng is open on Mondays, which makes it a good fit for a Monday when Sterkfontein is closed (Wits Sterkfontein Caves). On other days, pair them up:

  • Sterkfontein Caves: guided cave tours, Tuesday to Sunday, run by Wits University (Wits Sterkfontein Caves). Separate ticket.
  • Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve: self-drives, guided game drives and the Wonder Cave, on Kromdraai Road (Rhino & Lion).
  • Quad bikes: Sun Eagle Adventures runs quad bike rides from Maropeng.
  • Lion & Safari Park: Maropeng notes that the park has moved to a new location on the R512 Lanseria road.

For food, the hotel has its restaurant (Maropeng), but the site doesn’t say whether day visitors can eat there, so phone ahead. Sterkfontein has the Curious Café for quick bites (Wits Sterkfontein Caves), and Rhino & Lion lists Neck & Deck, the Thatch Café and the Boma.
