A Weekend Getaway Near Johannesburg: Two Days on the West Rand and in the Cradle
By Remon Geyser, 27 October 2026, 8 minute read
If you’re skimming
- The Cradle of Humankind is about 50 km northwest of Johannesburg, so a weekend here needs no long drive.
- Sterkfontein Caves are open Tuesday to Sunday and Maropeng every day, both 09:00 to 16:00 (official sites, checked November 2026). On a Monday long weekend, see Sterkfontein before Monday.
- NIROX Sculpture Park opens on weekends and public holidays, 10:00 to 16:00, when there are no special events (checked November 2026).
- Below: a two-day plan with romantic, family and outdoorsy options, plus where to stay.
Looking for a weekend getaway near Johannesburg without spending half of it on the N1? The Cradle of Humankind is about 50 km northwest of the city (Gauteng Tourism), with Muldersdrift right next door. In Your Pocket puts Maropeng at about 30 minutes’ drive from Sandton. That’s fossils, game, art and country lunches in one weekend.
This plan is for couples after a romantic getaway in Gauteng, families who want the kids off screens for two days, and anyone who’d rather be on a trail than in a mall. Pick the option that suits you at each stop. We haven’t done this trip ourselves. It’s built from the venues’ own opening hours, so you don’t arrive at a locked gate.
Before You Go: What’s Open When
Timing matters here, because the big sites don’t all keep the same days. As listed on the official sites on 7 November 2026:
| Place | Days and hours |
|---|---|
| Wits Sterkfontein Caves | Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 16:00, guided tours on the hour, last tour 15:00. Closed Mondays, 25 and 31 December (Wits Sterkfontein Caves) |
| Maropeng | Every day including weekends and public holidays, 09:00 to 16:00 (Maropeng) |
| Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve | Saturdays 08:00 to 18:00. Closed Mondays, except listed school holiday Mondays. The site gives Sunday closing as both 17:00 and 18:00 (Rhino & Lion) |
| NIROX Sculpture Park | Weekends and public holidays, 10:00 to 16:00, outside special events (NIROX) |
Confirm before you go. A Monday long weekend is the one to watch: Sterkfontein is shut.
Where to Base Yourself
Stay in one place for both nights and you’ll unpack once. Maropeng Boutique Hotel is a five-minute walk from the visitor centre, The Cradle Boutique Hotel is inside a private reserve with game drives and guided walks (The Cradle), and Muldersdrift has big country hotels and farm cottages. Our where to stay guide groups them by type.
Day 1 (Saturday): Caves, Fossils and an Afternoon of Your Choice
We’ve only given drive times where a source states one. For the rest, check your map app on the morning.
09:00, Sterkfontein Caves. Take the first tour. Tours last about an hour to an hour and a half. Wear non-slip shoes, and note that the tour isn’t recommended if you have mobility issues or claustrophobia (Wits Sterkfontein Caves). You can buy tickets online through Webtickets or at the site, and Wits suggests calling ahead on the day during holidays.
Late morning, Maropeng. In Your Pocket says the caves are only about five minutes’ drive away. The tour takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Book online or on site, and arrive at least 15 minutes before your slot (Maropeng).
Lunch. The Cradle Restaurant at The Cradle Boutique Hotel serves lunch from 12:00 to 17:00, according to the hotel’s site, checked November 2026. Confirm before you go. Or head to NIROX for And then there was Fire…, where pre-booking a seat also gets you a reduced park entry fee.
Afternoon, pick one:
- Romantic: wander NIROX Sculpture Park, on the R540. Leave the picnic basket at home: no food, drinks, cooler boxes or pets are allowed (NIROX).
- Family: Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, home to more than 600 animals including lions, white rhino, buffalo and cheetah, on a self-drive or a guided open-vehicle game drive. Our Rhino & Lion page covers WonderCave too.
- Outdoorsy: quad biking with Sun Eagle Adventures, which rides out from Maropeng.
Late afternoon. Couples might book a spa treatment, so book a time before you set off. Maropeng lists the Boitumelo Spa, and Glenburn Lodge’s spa has a couples’ room with a private Jacuzzi (Pink Book).
Day 2 (Sunday): Balloons, Treetops or Trails
Romantic: up with the sun. AirVentures says it’s the only balloon operator launching centrally within the Cradle of Humankind (AirVentures). Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris flies at sunrise from a private launch site in the Magalies River Valley, outside the West Rand, for about an hour, followed by a buffet breakfast (Bill Harrop’s). Ask the operator what happens if your flight can’t go ahead, and keep a plan B. A slow lunch back in Muldersdrift is a very good plan B. Our hot air balloon guide has more.
Family: a farm morning in Muldersdrift.
- Acrobranch tree-top courses: Acrobranch says its last day at Casalinga is 29 November 2026 and that it’s moving about 7 km to Syringa Park at Avianto Estate, with a grand opening on 5 December 2026 (Acrobranch Casalinga). The new park is on Driefontein Road, Muldersdrift, with courses from Acro-twigs (ages 3 to 6) to High Flying (ages 9 to adults). Most courses need a minimum height of 1.2 m or 1.3 m (Acrobranch Syringa Park). Check which park is open on your dates.
- For lunch, the Casalinga farm on Rocky Ridge Road has Leafy Greens, a plant-based café. Its own site says that from 1 April 2026 it moved back into the main Casalinga restaurant with a smaller menu, checked November 2026 (Leafy Greens). Check its hours before you go.
- Or try Honeydew Mazes, just outside our area in Honeydew (Gauteng Tourism lists it under Johannesburg), with the giant Elemental Maze for 150 or more players plus puzzle mazes.
- In season, The Cradle Berry Farm on the R374 has strawberry picking in October, November and December 2026, depending on the harvest. Check availability before you go (Gauteng Tourism, 2026).
- The Lion & Safari Park moved to the R512 Lanseria road in July 2016 (Maropeng). It’s at Broederstroom, about 13 km northwest of Lanseria (Why Joburg), which is in North West province (Wikipedia), so outside the West Rand.
Outdoorsy: trails and fresh air.
- Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge has more than 30 km of trails in a 160-hectare conservancy, an easy 10 km hiking route and a 1 km swimming route around the dam. In Your Pocket says it’s popular with mountain bikers, trail runners and open water swimmers. Ask about day access if you’re not staying there.
- Shepherd’s Fold Stables offers horse riding in the Elandsdrift Valley in Muldersdrift, bordering the Cradle (SA-Venues). It’s a listing-site entry, so check it’s operating and book first.
- On the way home, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort is open every day from 08:00 to 17:00, according to SANBI, checked November 2026 (SANBI). Confirm before you go. A good last leg stretch before the highway.
Tips for Planning the Weekend
- Mind the Monday. Sterkfontein is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays, and its last tour leaves at 15:00 (Wits Sterkfontein Caves). On a Monday long weekend, go before Monday.
- Book what books out. Maropeng and Sterkfontein both sell tickets online (Wits Sterkfontein Caves), and NIROX’s restaurant takes bookings.
- Allow for distance. NIROX says it’s about 45 minutes from Johannesburg and Pretoria and 20 minutes from Lanseria. Stops are spread out, so don’t cram in too many.
- Check the rules for kids. Age and height limits apply at Acrobranch (Acrobranch Syringa Park), and Sterkfontein isn’t suited to everyone (Wits Sterkfontein Caves).
