Lion & Safari Park is a wildlife park on the R512 at Broederstroom, about 13 km northwest of Lanseria Airport (Why Joburg). The park says it moved to “a new location on the R512 Lanseria road, within the Cradle of Humankind” from July 2016 (Lion & Safari Park). On the map, though, Broederstroom is in Madibeng in North West province (Wikipedia: Broederstroom), so it sits outside the West Rand and outside the area My West Rand covers. Think of it as an easy add on to a West Rand or Cradle day rather than a local spot.
This page is for families and visitors working out what to book, what it costs and what else to fit into the day. It’s an independent guide, not the park’s own site. For bookings and the latest information, go straight to lionandsafaripark.com.
What Is Lion & Safari Park?
The park calls itself a “quintessential tourist spot” that people have been visiting “for half-a-century”, and now trades as Lion and Safari Park (Lion & Safari Park). It describes its current site as a 1,200 hectare reserve (Lion & Safari Park).
The old Lion Park was in Honeydew. When it announced the move in 2015, operations manager Scott Simpson said urban development meant the old site was no longer remote, and the new site was described as being in the foothills of the Magaliesberg (Fourways Review, 2015). So if you remember a trip to the Lion Park on the Joburg side of Lanseria, that’s why the GPS now sends you further out.
On conservation, the park says its conservation fee supports habitat restoration and rehabilitation projects, and that its “ethical wildlife practices ensure the welfare of all animals is prioritised” (Lion & Safari Park). It also says it supports local and international research on animal behaviour, genetics and species health (Lion & Safari Park). Those are the park’s own words; read its conservation page if you want the detail.
Planning Your Visit
Where Is It and How Do You Get There?
The park is on the R512 at Broederstroom, about 13 km northwest of Lanseria Airport (Why Joburg; Lion & Safari Park). Broederstroom’s businesses sit beside or just off the R512, and Pecanwood Golf Estate is about 4 km north on the shore of Hartbeespoort Dam (Wikipedia: Broederstroom). The official site gives no street address and no working map: the “Get directions” links on its contact page are placeholders. Head for the R512 at Broederstroom, or phone +27 87 150 0100 for directions.
Hours
As listed on the official site on 7 November 2026 (Lion & Safari Park):
- Park: open every day of the year, 08:00 to 17:00, including weekends and public holidays.
- Lion feeding: 12:00 on weekends and public holidays. The site also lists a weekday 12:00 slot, so confirm.
- Restaurant, curio shops and kiosk: close at 18:00, as noted under the sunset safari.
Confirm on the official site before you go.
Tickets and Prices
Entry to the park and the restaurant is free, and you pay only for the activity you choose. Prices include the conservation fee unless noted, and the site says rates can change without notice (Lion & Safari Park). A selection, checked 7 November 2026:
| Activity | Adult | Senior (60+) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self drive safari | R400 | R215 | Your own car through the lion, wild dog and cheetah enclosures, plus an extended game drive |
| 1 hour guided safari | R575 | R300 | |
| 2 hour guided safari | R705 | R380 | |
| 2 hour sunset safari | R785 | R355 | Weekends and public holidays only, includes a lion feeding |
| 1.5 hour horseback safari | R760 | Maximum weight 85 kg | |
| 1 hour quad experience | R1,280 | Riders 16 and older; passenger rates listed separately | |
| Giraffe feed | R85 a bag | Bought on site | |
| Kiddies horse rides | R220 a child | Ages 3 to 12, about 10 minutes |
On the safaris, children under 12 go free, one child per paying adult (Lion & Safari Park). Most activities are booked online through the site; the sunrise and three hour horseback rides are for experienced riders only. One honest note from the giraffe line: the park says its giraffes roam freely and may not be at the feeding platform. They’re giraffes, not waiters.
Confirm prices on the official rates page before you go.
Kids and Facilities
The park lists a kiddies play area, the Wetlands Restaurant and Bar and the 5 Dome shopping experience, which it says sells locally sourced African arts and crafts, jewellery, clothing and homeware (Lion & Safari Park). Its Bull and Buck Grill was listed as temporarily closed when we checked. The site gives no restaurant hours and no accessibility information, so phone +27 87 150 0100 if you need to know (Lion & Safari Park).
Make a Day of It
Because the park sits between Lanseria and Hartbeespoort, it pairs naturally with either direction.
- Head into the Cradle. NIROX Sculpture Park on the R540 says it’s about 20 minutes from Lanseria Airport (NIROX) and opens on weekends and public holidays. See our NIROX Sculpture Park page. For fossils and caves, try Sterkfontein Caves and Maropeng, or plan the whole thing with our Cradle day trip guide.
- Want more animals? Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve is in the Cradle on Kromdraai Road (Rhino & Lion).
- Hartbeespoort side. The park sells combined packages with partner venues in Hartbeespoort, about 30 minutes away: an elephant and monkey sanctuary package, and a safari plus boat cruise on Hartbeespoort Dam. Both are booked by email (Lion & Safari Park). Hartbeespoort is outside the West Rand too.
- Heading back via Honeydew? Honeydew Mazes opens on weekends and public holidays, but sells its last tickets at 14:30 (Honeydew Mazes), so it works better as a morning stop than an afternoon one.
Where to eat: the Wetlands Restaurant is on site and entry is free (Lion & Safari Park). Over in the Cradle, And then there was Fire at NIROX is open to the public.
Staying over? Our where to stay guide covers Muldersdrift and the Cradle.

More on the Area
Lion & Safari Park is outside our patch, but the Cradle is right next door. Our Cradle of Humankind guide has the caves, Maropeng and places to stay, and things to do in the Cradle has more ideas. Coming from the Joburg side? See the Honeydew guide and the Muldersdrift guide.
