Hot Air Ballooning Over the Cradle of Humankind and Magaliesberg: Operators and What to Expect

By Heléne Geyser, 30 October 2026, 8 minute read

If you’re skimming

  • Two operators we could verify fly near Johannesburg: AirVentures, which says it launches within the Cradle of Humankind, and Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, which launches near Skeerpoort in the Magalies River Valley.
  • Both describe a flight of about an hour, in a morning of about three to four hours that starts before sunrise and ends with breakfast.
  • Flights are postponed if the weather isn’t suitable. AirVentures flies children from age 7 (120 cm minimum); Bill Harrop’s flies children older than 7 and taller than 1.3 m. Pregnant passengers can’t fly with either.
  • AirVentures lists 2026 prices on its site. Bill Harrop’s quotes on enquiry.

Want a hot air balloon flight near Johannesburg? We found two operators flying in the area: AirVentures, which says it’s the only balloon operator to launch centrally within the Cradle of Humankind (AirVentures), and Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, which flies from a private launch site in the Magalies River Valley nearby (Bill Harrop’s). Either way, you’re up before the sun, in the air for about an hour, and back on the ground in time for breakfast.

This page is for anyone planning a birthday surprise, an anniversary, a proposal, or just ticking it off the list. We haven’t flown with either operator. Everything below comes from what the operators say on their own websites, checked 7 November 2026.

Who Flies Hot Air Balloons Near Johannesburg?

Operator Where it flies What it says about itself
AirVentures “All flights take off from the breathtaking Cradle of Humankind” (AirVentures FAQ). Its Safari Flight goes over several game reserves within the World Heritage Site (AirVentures) Has won eight tourism awards. Offers Classic, Safari and exclusive flights for two (AirVentures)
Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris A launch site near Skeerpoort, west of Hartbeespoort Dam (Bill Harrop’s). Its address is Route 560, Skeerpoort, North West (Bill Harrop’s directions) Started by Bill and Mary Harrop in 1981, and describes itself as Southern Africa’s longest-established licensed balloon airline (Bill Harrop’s)

A quick geography note: Bill Harrop’s launches in North West province, outside the Cradle and outside our West Rand area, but within reach for a sunrise start. AirVentures meets guests at a lodge within the Cradle. Its Kloofzicht Lodge page puts the lodge in the Cradle of Humankind, about 40 minutes from both Johannesburg and Pretoria (AirVentures).

What Does a Balloon Flight Involve?

Here’s how the operators describe the morning. The details differ a little, so read your booking confirmation carefully.

The early start

  • AirVentures: confirms your exact meeting time the day before, and says it’s “typically very early (before sunrise)”. You can drive yourself, and there’s secure parking at the meeting point (AirVentures FAQ).
  • Bill Harrop’s: guests meet at the Clubhouse Pavilion shortly before sunrise, and the check-in time is in your reservation confirmation. Times shift through the year with sunrise (Bill Harrop’s FAQ).

Yes, that means an alarm somewhere around “is this even legal”. Lay your clothes out the night before.

How long it takes

Both operators say the flight itself lasts about an hour (AirVentures FAQ; Bill Harrop’s FAQ). The whole experience takes about three to four hours, including refreshments and breakfast (AirVentures FAQ; Bill Harrop’s FAQ). AirVentures’ flight pages put the Classic Flight at about 3 hours in total and the Safari Flight at about 4, as the Safari includes a transfer to a game reserve.

Landing and breakfast

  • AirVentures: the ground crew follows the balloon, collects you at the landing site and takes you back to the lodge. Breakfast is at Kloofzicht Lodge (AirVentures FAQ). Its flight pages also list tea and coffee beforehand and a commemorative certificate (Classic Flight).
  • Bill Harrop’s: pre-flight tea, coffee or hot chocolate, refreshments after landing, a full English buffet breakfast at its Clubhouse Pavilion and a “certificate of bravery”. The ground crew brings you back to the launch site (Bill Harrop’s FAQ).

When the weather says no

Balloons only fly in suitable weather. AirVentures says your flight will be postponed, and you can reschedule within 12 months or ask for a refund (AirVentures FAQ). Bill Harrop’s says the flight will be postponed and its reservations team will help you rebook (Bill Harrop’s FAQ). Its FAQ doesn’t spell out a refund policy and links to a passenger terms and conditions PDF instead, so read that or ask.

Our tip: don’t book your flight for the morning of a fixed event, like the actual wedding day or the last day of a visitor’s trip. Leave room to rebook.

Who Can Fly? Kids, Health and What to Wear

  • Children: AirVentures welcomes children aged 7 or older who are at least 120 cm tall (AirVentures FAQ). Bill Harrop’s says children must be older than 7 and taller than 1.3 m, and are measured at check-in. If a child is too short, the ticket is forfeited (Bill Harrop’s).
  • Pregnancy: neither operator flies pregnant passengers (AirVentures FAQ; Bill Harrop’s FAQ).
  • Mobility and health: AirVentures says all passengers must be able to stand for the whole flight and get in and out of the basket (Classic Flight). Bill Harrop’s says flying is generally not advised for people with back or knee problems, and suggests consulting your doctor about medical or mobility concerns (Bill Harrop’s FAQ).
  • Weight: Bill Harrop’s may ask for passenger weights for flight planning, especially for private flights (Bill Harrop’s FAQ).
  • Clothing: long pants, comfortable shoes, a jacket if it’s cool, and a hat, says AirVentures (AirVentures FAQ). Bill Harrop’s asks for closed walking shoes and “NO HEELS & DRESSES”, and warns that valley mornings can be cool, especially in winter (Bill Harrop’s FAQ).

How Much Does a Hot Air Balloon Flight Cost?

AirVentures lists these prices under a 2026 heading (checked 7 November 2026, confirm before you book):

AirVentures flight Adult (per person) Children 7 to 12
Classic Flight R3,500 R1,900
Safari Flight R3,650 R2,050
Exclusive Classic Flight for Two R10,550 per couple Not applicable

Group rates for six or more are on each flight page (Classic Flight; Safari Flight; Exclusive Classic Flight for Two).

Bill Harrop’s doesn’t publish a standard rate. You enquire for the rate when you reserve, and private flights are priced on request, based on group size and weight (Bill Harrop’s).

How Do You Get to the Launch Sites?

  • Bill Harrop’s: its directions page estimates about 60 to 75 minutes from Johannesburg (N14 towards Krugersdorp, then the R512 towards Hartbeespoort and the R560), the same from Pretoria (N4 towards Rustenburg, then the R512 and R560), and about 30 to 40 minutes from Krugersdorp (Bill Harrop’s directions). Transport to the launch site isn’t included (Bill Harrop’s FAQ).
  • AirVentures: its pages give different estimates: about 30 minutes from Joburg and 40 from Pretoria on the Safari Flight page, about 45 minutes from Johannesburg on the Classic Flight page, and about 40 minutes from both cities on its Kloofzicht Lodge page. Transfers can be arranged at extra cost (AirVentures FAQ).

What to Ask Before You Book

  • Exactly where do we meet, and what time is check-in?
  • Is this a shared or private flight, and how many passengers will be in the basket? (AirVentures says its largest balloons carry up to 16 (AirVentures FAQ). Bill Harrop’s says balloon sizes vary (Bill Harrop’s FAQ).)
  • What happens if the weather cancels us: a new date, a refund, or either?
  • What are the age, height and weight rules, and will the kids be measured on the day?
  • Is breakfast included, and can you cater for dietary needs or allergies? Bill Harrop’s asks you to tell them in advance (Bill Harrop’s FAQ).
  • Can a non-flying family member come along? Bill Harrop’s charges a spectator surcharge and needs it arranged in advance (Bill Harrop’s FAQ).
  • What licences do the operator and pilot hold? Bill Harrop’s says licensed pilots lead each flight. Ask either operator for the details.

Making a day of it afterwards? Our Cradle day trip guide has sample days, and where to stay in Muldersdrift and the Cradle can save you the pre-dawn drive.
