Golden barrel cacti look good in containers:   This cactus commonly grows 2 to 4 feet but may grow taller can grow
to be 6 to 10 feet tall. It can reach a diameter of 18 to 30 inches or more.

This plant makes an interesting addition to your garden in a container, both indoors and out. It is preferable to keep this type of cactus outdoors, as the fish hooks thereon can be quite dangerous indoors.

Watering:
These cacti are very tight in their grow pots, often forming a muffin-like shape as they pop out over the edges of their pot. Thus it is nearly impossible to check soil moisture.  In addition, the dense intertwined spines prevent feeling its tightness,
or how firm it is.

Watering schedule must always be very lean.
Water the plant thoroughly maybe every two months and then leaving it alone.

The best advice is that if there is any question on whether to water or not, DO NOT WATER.
It is highly unlikely that a barrel cactus will die from under watering.

How to get the water into the soil.
Water over the plant. The water will run down the ridges and into the soil under the plant.
What you need to know about this cactus:
They are slow growing, very, very, very slow growing. There will often be no change in their shape or size in an interior environment.  Do not overwater as this plant will die from too much water.

Problems:
They die from the inside out.   When there is a problem,  you may not know until months later since these plants start to disintegrate in their cores.  This cactus can be infested with mealy bug and/or scale. It is not common, but it does happen.

A spray to remove the pests and a coating with insecticidal soap is the best treatment and defense for such an infestation.
The spines will hurt you if touched. Therefore, handle it with care.
It is wise to place this plant out of high traffic areas, and out of the reach of children.

If kept indoors, diffuse the light.  Do not keep in direct sunlight, as it will burn the plant.
Once this plant reaches a certain size it is a most magnificent sight indeed.
